Should I Post About My Car Accident on Social Media?

Being a car accident victim is a frightening, isolating experience. It’s common for victims to try to reach out to family, friends, and even other collision victims for support on social media while they’re recovering at home. However, this may not necessarily be the best idea if you plan to pursue any kind of compensation for the damages you suffered in the accident. Here’s why.

Defense Attorneys Are Watching Your Socials

As unsettling as it sounds (and it is), defense attorneys on the side of the at-fault party are likely monitoring your social media accounts. This is especially true if you were involved in an accident with someone who has high-powered lawyers or a truck owned by a company with access to an entire legal team.

In some cases, defense attorneys may create fake accounts to infiltrate privacy settings, so even if you’re only sharing information with your “friends,” it’s possible that someone you met online or introduced in your internet social bubble is actually a mole.

When Posting Poses a Problem

You may think posting about your accident on social media isn’t an issue. After all, you’re being honest, right? Or perhaps you aren’t even posting about the collision but are just sharing photos and anecdotes from your day to day life after the accident. Either way, if defense attorneys have access to this, they can most certainly use it against you to paint a very different picture from the truth.

For example, say you broke your leg in the accident. One day, you were able to go grocery shopping and made a quick post about it online. Perhaps you found a funny product and jokingly posed a picture of it, or were proud of yourself for being able to make it to the store with your injuries and wanted to celebrate.

What attorneys for the at-fault party will do is twist your posts to suggest they’re proof you’re not injured or that you can participate in daily activities. If it took an extra dose of pain medication, a wheelchair, or other significant accommodations just to make it work, this is likely to get lost in translation.
